    I ask ChatGPT what a customer would ask, with your trade and your town in it, something like ‘who do I talk to about mowing lawns in Belper’, nothing clever. I word it several different ways, because your customers do. Then I check whether you’re in the answer.

    This is where you come up when somebody searches for your trade, like ‘kitchen fitter Belper’, not your business name. Everyone comes up for their own name, so that tells you nothing. Then I check your Google Business Profile, your listing with the reviews and opening times, because that’s what gets you into the map with the pins, above the normal results.

    I check how fast it loads and how it works on a phone, because that’s where most people look at it now. Then whether anything is counting your enquiries, so when somebody fills your contact form in, is it recorded along with where they came from. Most of the time I find nothing set up at all, which means you can’t tell which part of your marketing is bringing the work in. I’ll show you how to fix that.

    I look at how many reviews you’ve got and how recent they are. Then whether anybody’s replying to them. Most businesses don’t, because it’s easy to forget when you’re busy, and it’s one of the quickest wins there is.

Who does it

I’m Norton. I studied media photography, then spent a few years as a production assistant at a live events business, editing a lot of video, doing graphic design and handling the technical side, lighting, sound and staging. After that I went into logistics and became operations director, running 100 odd wagons, lots of staff and lots of pressure. I got to the point where I knew lorries weren’t for me. I was burnt out, so I built a studio in a shed at the bottom of the garden and left my phone in the house for a while.

Then two people I’d worked with before asked me to do their marketing. I said yes, as my own business, and that’s where North Bear came from, a bit over two years ago now. A couple of remote specialists help with some of the marketing for clients, but every MOT is done by me, same as the web and video work.

How long does it take?

Within 48 hours of you paying. Order on a Tuesday morning and it’s with you by Thursday morning. The form takes a few minutes.

Do I have to have a call?

No. You don’t need a call to buy it or to get it. You fill the form in, I email you an invoice, and once it’s paid the MOT comes to you by email. If you want to speak to me before or after, book a call.

What if I haven’t got a website?

Yes, and it’s the same £295. I do the other five checks as normal, and on the website check I’ll tell you straight whether not having one is costing you work or whether a strong Google Business Profile will do for now. The website check will score low, and it can pull the AI search score down too, because ChatGPT reads websites as well as reviews when it decides who to suggest. You still get a score out of 100 and the three things to fix first.

Will you try to sell me something after?

I’ll tell you what I’d fix, and you can say no. If you want to know what I’d charge to do any of it, ask and I’ll tell you. If you don’t want me to do any of it, the report is still yours, and plenty of it you can sort yourself.

Do you work outside Derbyshire?

Yes. The MOT is done online, so it works for a business anywhere in the UK, and I run the searches for your town. Most of my clients are round Belper, but I’ve got one in Lancashire and one in London. The score comes from what the searches show, not from local knowledge.

Is it really £295 with nothing else to pay?
